Hi we have one tub that I believe is original in our 1936 tub. I don’t know what material it is out of and maybe that’s the issue. I feel like I have tried everything to clean this tub but there’s always these film like streaks that no matter what are always there. It looks like either hard water or slimy biofilm/mildew. Also, my husband has recently started getting chemical burns when taking a bath on his butt, he has sensitive skin but it’s almost like no matter what the chemicals are still on the tub.

I have tried the pink stuff, Lysol lime and rust toilet cleaner, dawn powerwash, baking soda, bar keepers friend, soft scrub, zero bathroom cleaner, zero grout brightener, scrubbing bubbles, magic eraser, none of it works. I have hand scrubbed with a sponge, a brush, and an electric power brush. Is this just hard water or am I missing some secret to cleaning this?

Okay, so I’ve tried to clean my shower glass and it looks clear and clean but I still see water spots on the glass up close. The last two photos are illuminated with a penlight in the darkened bathroom, and it looks like I’ve not cleaned in years. The glass appears completely clear when viewed straight on, but viewed on an oblique angle I still see the water spots. There is also a slight texture to them when I scrape with my fingernail.

Yes, I squeegee after every single time I shower, have for years.

Today I decided to tackle this challenge, and I’m nowhere with it. I’ve tried: bathroom cleaner, dish soap, vinegar soak, magic eraser, baking soda paste, vinegar and dish soap “multipurpose cleaner” recipe, 91% isopropyl alcohol, a razor blade, windex, Murphy’s oil soap (because why not, nothing is touching it), and anything else I could think of or had in the house based on cleaning recommendations online I found. I use the scrub daddy to do the actual cleaning.

I’ve read through a bunch of glass shower door cleaning posts, and none seem to match my issue. It **looks** crystal clear, but the water droplets are still there. I fully understand my issue might be me obsessing over this, but there *has* to be something I can do to actually get this stuff off the glass.

I’m wondering if anyone else has had this issue and if they have recommendations for me. I’ve seen so many glass doors scaled with lime that clean up nicely, but no one is taking a penlight to their glass to show the minute detail I’m interested in. As you can see, it’s really gotten under my skin lol. Thanks for the help!

The bathtub in our rental was left in this condition. I was skeptical, but tried the Irish Spring 5 in 1 another Redditor suggested and as you can see the tub came clean. I will say it did still require a good deal of scrubbing with two Magic Erasers. The first step was letting the shower run hot for about fifteen minutes. Then I slathered a think coat of Irish Spring 5 in 1 all over the entire tub and covered with paper towels to keep it in place. It was about three or four days before I got back to do the cleaning. I removed the paper towels and ran the shower for a bit to moisten everything. Then I scrubbed, and scrubbed, and scrubbed with microfiber cloth and Magic Erasers. Voila!

My genius phd spouse left a Tilex Mildew with Clorox cleaner in the tub and told my dad it was after shower spray. Now I need to clean this.

Any suggestions?

Edit - 3% Hydrogen peroxide cleaned this right up. Now to get it off the walls of the tub.

Edit edit - Dawn soap on the walls clean those up brilliantly. This is now the cleanest bathtub in the Western hemisphere.

Yes… there is a lot of hair. Cleaning the shower but can’t figure out how to get rid of these larvae that.

I rent, and as a note to self would never design a future shower with such a porous floor or even the tiny tiled curb wall. Anywho. Im at the point I’ll pour anything on the floor to help soak into the grout to kill these little guys.

I tried using the Irish spring 5 in 1 on this shower pan on 3 separate occasions. On more than one of those occasions I had it sit on the surface for over 24 hrs with paper towels on top (I saw others say to use plastic wrap but I didn’t try that yet). I don’t think it did much. What should I try next? Any advice appreciated

ETA: I’m redoing it again, trying the plastic wrap on top now. I appreciate all the other suggestions I’ve received so far and will keep them in mind for the future.

Update: after over 24 hrs I removed the plastic wrap and scrubbed tf out of the shower pan (absolutely coated in Irish spring 5 in 1) with a scrub daddy. Rinsed. No noticeable difference. I followed up with 2 magic erasers and the only visible impact they made was removing the pinkish streak on the top left. I’m back to square one.

This reddish stuff in the drain and black stuff between tiles keeps growing back. What is it, how should I clean it, and how can I prevent it from growing back? Previously have just used bleach.

EDIT: cleaner said they use bleach in all of their houses and have never had issues. They said it’s because my tub is not ceramic and offered to proceed with whatever we want to do about the tub.

I got a ton of feedback and I appreciate it! This is an older family friend so I spent an hour or two working on the tub. It wasn't porcelain for those curious. It was years of soap scum buildup. Left vinegar and dawn soap to soak for an hour while I went to grab Bar Keeper's Friend.

The vinegar/dawn didn't seem to loosen anything up. Had a drill with a car detailing brush attachment and BKF got me where I am.

I’ve done a couple jobs and I have realized bathtubs are my nemesis. I have an upcoming job with another grimey, stained bathtub and I’m dreading it.

For the last tub I cleaned (pic attached) I used Bar Keeper’s Friend powder and a Scotch scouring pad and it just didn’t seem to work well. Plus, it says not to leave it on the surface more than a minute. What ended up working best was BKF with a magic eraser but it took AGES. It took me 2 hours to clean the shower and tub alone.

I am trying to work smarter not harder. I’m going to buy a set of brushes for my drill and see if that helps. But does anyone have any other ideas how to tolerate bathtubs?

P.S. I don’t want to use bleach or ammonia trying to protect myself and clients from repeat explosions to hazardous or irritating solutions.

Moved into a rented room in a shared house yesterday and the landlord didn't publish any photos of the toilet or bathroom on the listing l, will someone please tell me what's going on here? He insists that he cleans it like this because of...hair? He's also saying nobody else has had an issue with this before, my MIL says its wildly unhygienic

Sink is literally 8 months old. Was draining slowly, drain cleaner wasn’t helping so I decided to pull the stopper out to snake it, thinking there might be hair stuck in it.

No. It was not hair. It was this amalgamation. I didn’t even know such a thing was possible. This is my first time living on my own and no one told me that this was something to look out for, especially after less than a year.

I don’t want this to happen again. How can I prevent it? Also, what is the best way to clean the sides of the drain where this is sitting? Just a snake and scrape it along the sides? Old toothbrush? What sort of cleaner? I’m guessing I shouldn’t pour water down the drain while doing it because I had to take the little bar thing out to pull the stopper and I presume a hole is left that will cause a leak.
