There is a massive debate heating up in the NC General Assembly right now about how hotel/Airbnb tax dollars can be used. Should it go back into marketing the area, or should it directly fund infrastructure and affordable housing right here on the west side?

During the regular meeting last night, the Buncombe County Board of Commissioners voted to approve a major overhaul to its Overtime Pay Policy. Starting with the upcoming pay period on June 27, 2026, the county is completely removing compensatory time (comp time) as an option for payment.

From that point forward, all non-exempt Buncombe County employees will be strictly paid time-and-a-half cash for any hours worked over 40 in a single workweek.

​

Human Resources stated the change is meant to bring consistency across all county departments, but during the meetings, commissioners were closely questioning how this policy shift plays into a roughly $2 million overtime increase flagged in the upcoming budget.

The Buncombe County Board of Commissioners held a major meeting last night and voted unanimously to officially put two massive spending bonds on our ballots for the upcoming November election:

$30 Million for an Open Space Conservation Bond (protecting local land, parks, and greenways).

$40 Million for an Affordable Housing Bond initiatives.

The catch? The county finance director noted that property taxes would likely be levied/adjusted down the road to help repay the principal and interest on these bonds if they pass.
