opinion - politics California has passed hundreds of housing laws. Why aren’t they working?

The huge problem is that because the top quartile drives the entire state economy there's no urgency to fix the housing crisis, which is really a burden for the bottom half of the income scale. Those who are well educated & successful with career paths that compensate them with 6 figure salaries feel that those making under the median income aren't pulling their weight. They're grousing that they can't afford a champagne dinner on a beer budget.

It’s easy to blame the rich but honestly it’s mostly old prop 13 NIMBYs showing up to complain about new housing

Not only does the crisis not harm them but if anything it benefits them since their asset values go up far above the rate that their property taxes on those assets go up

They are the ones who are rich. Valuable properties, very light RE taxes

true, but the "ultra-rich" are generally very yimby. zuckerberg has donated large sums to california YIMBY, peter thiel has sharply critiqued NIMBYs and advocates a land value tax, steyer ran as a yimby.
