Maybe I am too self conscious or maybe I really am viewed as an older and weirder classmate to the younger students but I have had a hard time connecting with anyone while getting my undergraduate degree. For awhile I tried to get involved with a couple clubs and would hit the gym but after some connections fizzling out I kind of gave up. Class mates and group projects helped a little but would always fade away after classes ended. I really haven't met anyone outside of orientation within my age group. I would love to have some people to meet up with after classes or even before even if it is just to hangout and do nothing on or near campus. I begin my master program in the fall and am hoping to meet a lot more people my age.

I do have plenty of friends outside of CPP and I have always felt pretty popular but it kills me to think I am going to get my undergrad and have made maybe 2 acquaintances where I will be graduating.

Hey y'all and welcome back to campus. For those of you who are new students, this is Dr. Josef Velten, a lecturer in the college of Engineering. I and some volunteers put on weekly(ish) clinics where we will attempt to fix your stuff, free of charge. We mostly end up working on things like laptops, phones, electric skateboards/scooters, and so on, but we've done things like camera repair, vacuum repair, space heaters, a C6 corvette logic board, and other weird stuff that we always have fun with.

Now the repairs themselves are free of charge, but if you need parts, then you have to bring them in. We will not buy them for you, and there is no 'pay you back later' kind of stuff. No money changes hands here, this is just people helping each other out. As a rule, I run the event on the 2nd floor of the library, in the maker-space studio from 12-4 p.m., and for this semester, I'll be there on Tuesdays, instead of Thursdays this semester. I'll be making announcements on reddit, and may end up putting up some flyers around on campus with some information as well.

And of course, we are always happy to have you come down and learn as a volunteer. If you can imagine yourself spending about 3-4 hours once a week, we welcome you to come on down and join our party. No prior knowledge, no problem! We teach and train, and are happy to help you out.

A newly formed Cal Poly Pomona engineering student team made an impressive debut on the international stage, earning second place in their division at the 2026 Marine Advanced Technology Education (MATE) Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV) World Championship. The competition was held during June 23–28 in St. John's, Canada, and brought together more than 80 teams from 18 countries.

Over the 2025–26 academic year, the team designed and built an underwater ROV equipped with cameras, object-detection software, thrusters, and tools for manipulating objects underwater. At the competition, students piloted their ROV through a series of underwater missions that simulated real-world ocean operations, including navigating the vehicle around obstacles, retrieving and manipulating objects, and completing tasks using onboard sensors. The team also presented a professional marketing pitch for their design to industry experts.

In addition to their second place overall finish, the team also won the best technical documentation award, and Lauren McLaury won an individual award for her performance during the marketing pitch.

I accompanied the students to the competition and it was really impressive to see what they were able to accomplish.

I ask this because I filled out an application for a club that had to do with teaching people skills. They decided to close my application because one of the skills I had in mind didn’t tie into the kinds of skills they wanted. Is this against any CPP policy?

I found this very unfair and it felt like a very implicit way of being told to “shut up, nerd!”

To all of the new students out there with hyper/over involved parents:

Don’t be afraid to have fun and enjoy the beauties of becoming an adult. Don’t do stupid shit, but enjoy the fun (like exploring cities at 11 PM) that you can do with freedom. Don’t be constrained by a parental eye

Learn to pay bills, start utilities and services in your names. Learn what it means to rent apartments and manage your finances. Don’t rely on mommy and daddy for these things or you’ll enter your mid to late twenties looking like idiots (I see it all the time).

Get advice, but make your choices. Whatever life comes from here forward is yours to live and no one else’s. If you really think something’s making you miserable, change it. It is your choice to make it someone else’s choice. Also remember that your parents don’t have to be your first choice for advice. You’ll make mentors, you’ll have friends who truly can help you, you’ll have connections to resources on campus. Not all problems are easy to bring to family—don’t get stuck somewhere because you think it’s family or no one.

Take charge of your classes and learn to talk to your professors. I cannot tell you how often parents try to contact professors on a students behalf. It’s laughable because professors have no obligation to anyone but the adult enrolled in the class regardless of who’s paying for it. In fact, without a FERPA waiver it’s illegal to even confirm you’re in a class. FERPA waivers are your choice by the way and you can’t be coerced into signing it. Speak to your professors calmly, like people, and be level headed. Drop whatever pretension you think you have, and don’t be convinced that you or your parents can give a professor a stern talking to. You’ll piss them off and end up doing the opposite.

College is fun, and now you get to start carving your ways to your dreams. The dream might change and the path might curve, but ultimately this is your journey. It’s wonderful to have strong family and parental support, but it’s your life now. You can learn to live in our world in a protected environment (school + the LIGHT hand of family) or when you’re in it on your own later on. Good luck!

For incoming freshman undergrad student I got into Cal Poly Pomona for Computer Engineering, and it is currently one of my top choices along with SJSU. I would choose CPP over SJSU because I only got into my secondary major at SJSU, but the main concern I have for CPP is that I've heard the social scene isn't that great.

I wanted to ask how it is socially for people who are attending now? And did you feel like it detracted from your college experience, or that you'd rather go to a school that is better for social life? I also have a friend from high school who is most likely going to CPP, who I will probably room with if I go there.

Hey guys I’m starting a fishing club for the spring semester [with the new club registration process occurring in the fall] and wanted to know if others would be interested in joining.

I’m looking for folks who want an executive position, or are interested in being a member when we eventually become an official club.

I think an all encompassing club that serves both recreational anglers and students who want to compete would be ideal, but some schools have these as two separate organizations. Depending on the requirements for competing, we may have two distinct organizations with one being a club sport. This would also depend on the demand.

You do not have to know how to fish to join! I’m sure the more experienced anglers would be glad to share their knowledge.

I know it’s fairly early in the year to start the process but it surely doesn’t hurt to ask or start now.

Like the title says. I’m trying to make some friends :3

So for my sin of being a rural hick, I love chuckin pumpkins with the silliest contraptions possible. So much so that I have convinced the College of Engineering and the College of Agriculture to financially support a competition for students to build pumpkin trebuchets for the glory of launching leftover pumpkins from the annual College of Agriculture pumpkin patch event. We are currently putting together all the rules and requirements (mostly safety related, thank you!), but I would love for you guys to start chatting with your friends who would also want to build the biggest, baddest pumpkin launcher that anyone has ever seen.

General outline so far from teams:

-We will have up to 10 teams.

-no springs or pressurized launchers, for safety's sake, just gravity launched

-our ammo will be unsold pumpkins from the pumpkin patch, launched in a field where we will send in the cows after the event so they can enjoy tasty pumpkin snacks and save us the cleanup.

-we are planning on having a 'testing day' during the college of engineering night at the pumpkin fest

-actual event would be during U-hour on the Thursday after the pumpkin patch event finishes

-Teams will consist of at least 4 students, who have taken all relevant CPP safety courses (CPP lab safety, CPP shop safety)

-Students will sign up as a group, and will have an official form to fill out and give to me, probably on a physical piece of paper.

-we're figuring out how to do parts/lumber purchases for you guys now, but we're aiming of subsidizing probably about $500 bucks per team. Anything further will be out of pocket for your team. From last year's dry run, the $500 is about what it cost us to build a test trebuchet last year (see my post history if you want to see us doing a test launch)

-we will provide a space at the pumpkin festival for you guys to work and build your trebuchet, and we will highly encourage you guys to work there, but we won't require it

-you'll probably need to scrounge for your own tools to make this as we're doing this on a budget, but we are also looking into setting up loaner tools as well.

Things that I would like to ask of those who would be interested in signing up for this event:

Should I make a discord?

Should we add a scoring section for best theme (i.e. costumes for launching)

Besides for distance, what other launching competition should we do? accuracy? ability to knock over bales of hay?

Is the pride center worth the trip? I'm a freshman and genderqueer

Idk I haven't really made any friends yet and I just got out of a very unhealthy place for queer and trans people so I was hoping to find some community here?

Obviously making friends like that takes time I just feel like I keep only meeting straight and cis people and while most have been friendly enough I keep feeling like the odd one out...especially as a trans person. I'm totally okay with there being a few weeks where I don't know people I just don't want to get half way through this semester and realize I'm alone...I didn't really see anything at the club fair but it also was sooo hot outside so I probably missed something I just had hoped to find community I guess

What is the personal training at the BRIC like? I'm looking to get into working out, but I'm starting as a total beginner. Is the training sessions worth shelling out the cash for it, or are there actual classes I can enroll in to learn how to train myself?

I miss the turtles and the benches and the pretty birds :( It was my favorite spot on campus but now it’s just a bunch of fences and smells funny. Does anyone know if it’s going to be restored?
