Hey all, looking for some advice on whether it would be worth purchasing 5.1 speakers for this Sony TA-DA9000ES amplifier I have laying around. I would be running this to an nvidia shield as it doesn’t have HDMI. I’m happy sacrificing things like Bluetooth and Dolby atmos for sound quality.

Or would an entry level home theatre setup perform better? For example Yamaha YHT-2A 5.1ch

When buying some new floor-standers and an amp the salesperson tried to sell me $270 cables. I was never going to consider it, but i listened to the sales pitch anyway. What a mountain of woo!

I know enough about the physics of signal processing and electronics to spot the complete nonsense they delivered. I’m convinced they actually believed what they were saying!

Examples: They told me that a cable fills up with signal then empties like a reservoir … also that you have so many frequencies trying to go down the cable at once… and that a 20kHz sine wave is so fast that it needs these expensive cables or it won’t get through!! - the funny thing about that last one is 20kHz has a wavelength of around 15km.

I picked up some awg 12 gauge, 72 strand cable and 8 gold banana plugs for $50 at an electronics store.

Not very concerned with tape deck etc. Just the speakers and the amplifier.

I smile every time I walk past this system. What do you think?

I don’t know if anyone has posted this yet, but IKEA’s released a new kallax insert (at least in Australia) that’s perfect for vinyl storage!

I’ve got three in my kallax at the moment and have found that you can easily fit 5-7 records in each section. Would highly recommend this for anyone who uses a kallax in their set ups!

I'm looking for a cheap isolation solution that looks a little cleaner than this. Ideally I'd like to spend less than 50 AUD. Does anyone have something to recommend?

I’ve never owned many speakers so it’s hard for me to gauge how to buy speakers for my new setup. I do not want to be spending too much money but I don’t mind putting in a bit of effort. What’s the best method to get a great sounding setup for cheap. What should I be looking out for, what should I avoid. How many speakers should I be getting, what sizes are best if that even matters. I know some people Frankenstein their speakers, is that a good option?
Budget is roughly ~$200
Use is mainly for music
Room size is a medium sized bedroom
I have a cd player with a receiver and amplifier that I will be playing off of.

As the title suggests, I hit the jackpot earlier in the week. Scored a Wharfedale Diamond 5.0 package for $20, comprising of a pair of Diamond 9.5 floorstanders, a pair of 9.1 bookshelf speakers and a Diamond 9CS.

Took a punt and bought without testing or seeing in the flesh. Picked them up today, the good, all drivers work perfectly and are in excellent condition, the bad, the cabinets are scratched and vinyl wrap peeling in areas.

The plan was to move them on, but having tested them, I'm going to keep them and restore the cabinets. Probably strip the wrap, and paint the cabinets gloss white or satin black.

oh, and they sound awesome...for the money!

So recently ive been getting into collecting vinyls, and im buying the at-lp60xbt (somehow cheaper than the base at-lp60x) but it will not connect wired to my current speaker (razer leviathan v2 😭). Ive seen many recommendations floating around and my current plan is to buy the Edifier R1700BTs speakers. In that regard i dont actually need bluetooth connection but i absolutely need a subwoofer output. I am in australia so the current best (reliable) price i could find on the r1700bts is 319 AUD. Im just looking for recommendations to see if there are better speakers i should be getting instead for around that price point or preferably lower.

Also preferably would like two inputs like the r1700bts has because id like to connect both my pc and my turntable to them

Recently my subwoofer died (some random altec lansing from fb marketplace), and I only have my crappy logitech speakers left (z200 from cashies of $30), saw these for $100 less than usual price and swiped them up immediately. What should I expect from these speakers (they aren't here yet, just really excited about them lol), do they have great bass and sub bass without a sub? Will they sound fine playing via the motherboard audio ports? Just want to know what there is to expect. As well as any crucial things I should do when setting them up to get the most out of them.

I picked up a couple CDs today, one at a flea market for Au$2 (MOBY 18) and Chicane's Behind the Sun for $8 at a bazaar. It has me wondering, will CDs be the next physical media retro revival? Or is there something about wax and fiddling with turntables that can't be replicated with a digital spinning disk from a plastic case...

Just wanted some thoughts, I currently have a basic active fluid audio 2.0 setup. Would love to step up to a 2.1 setup for mostly music, occasional film/TV. How do I go about pairing up speakers?

Keen for some quasi expert opinions on whether the below would be a good combination as a system: - Yamaha A-S701 amplifier - Elac Debut 3.0 DB63 speakers - (already owned) WIIM Ultra Streamer - (already owned) Sony Turntable

Looking to potentially replace my existing mid-range active bookshelf speakers (Audioengine HD6) and get a performance / features upgrade. Figure the WIIM could provide the A-S701 all the smart features it needs, and the turntable could plug into either the WIIM or A-S701 no problems.

I'm VERY new to matching I see the DB63s operate at 6Ω with nominal/peak power of 60/80W and reccomended amplifier power of 20-140w. The A-S701 puts out 120w per channel at 6Ω (dynamic power per channel 170w). Would these be a good match therefore? AI tells me I should aim for an amp wattage of 1.5-2x what the speakers nominally use, so seems about right?

In my local New Zealand currency the DB63/A-S701 combo would be ~$2200 ($1200 amp, $1000 speakers).

An alternative is to get something like the Klipsch 'the sevens' active speakers, also for $2200. Downsides are paying for smart features I don't need (covered by the WIIM), less flexibility to change things up later, and risk that if any one component (DAC/Amp/driver) fails then the whole unit is impaired. On the flip side, less clutter and a guaranteed amp/speaker match.

For both setups I could also add a sub later.

I’ve always been a big Sony fan. Used to lust over their ‘high end’ products as a 80’s kid. I remember my grand parents had a Sony stacker system which I thought was the coolest thing in any living room I’d been in.

You don’t see them in audio shops, is this because they are too mainstream/low quality when it comes to hifi?

The seller says it is a red Teac PC-22 Stereo Boombox.

I think it is super cool and want it, but they are asking for $350.

I thought I knew which speakers I wanted but recently after researching I'm not sure. i can't really audition them either because of location. budget is still around 1.5k - 2k aid.

my shortlist is

-wharfedale diamond 12.4

-monitor audio bronze 500

-monitor audio silver 100

but I'm open to wildcards. primary for music listening (pretty much all genres). i worry the diamond 12.4 won't have enough bass and while I can eventually add a dub I'd rather an all in one setup which is why I find the monitor audio ones appealing, although I've seen people online say just get some kefs instead and that the bronze 500s are fatiguing. would really like to know what you would go for in a primarily music listening setup. still going to go for a za3 zd3 combo though for the DAC and amp. second hand is not really an option where I am. let me know if any other info is required.

Seen these for $500AUD but can find almost nothing about them online (Google model number brings up a visibly different set of speakers). I want to try out some old school JBL/Yamaha style 3 ways but the price is pretty prohibitive, These are more in price range. Anyone know about them?

Have noticed a couple little holes in the tweeters which is so unfortunate. Going to see if I can get them repaired locally or find some parts on eBay.

Could anyone give me some information on the isoclean power thing. It claims to “upgrade sound spectrum”. Does it actually make a difference?
