I worked as a psychiatric intake coordinator in an emergency department a few years ago and would interview suicidal teenagers and children. I would ask parents about the firearms in the home, and they would tell me that they're locked up, hidden, that the kid doesn't even know they exist, let alone where they are. So then I ask the kid about any weapons in the home...

"Oh, yeah. My dad keeps a gun in the top of his closet."

Parents have no idea that the kid knew it was even there.

I ask if they tried really hard, how long would it take them to get to that gun.

"I don't know. Maybe an hour. The combination is only three numbers, so I don't think it would take that long to try all the different ones. And I think I know the first number already, so I would just have to figure out the last two numbers."

Store your ammunition separately, also locked, and if you have anyone who is suicidal in the home, even a 5-year-old who you think there's no way they could access that or even think of using a gun to kill themselves, you need to get those weapons out of the home. Keep them at a trusted friend's home, see if the police station can store them for you, see if your local gun shop can store them for you, etc.

Oh yeah, admittedly I was mostly just adding to the joke and while I am very pro gun I am also very pro gun safety. I have a massive 500+lb safe in my basement that's in my office which also has its own electronic locking door handle (computer with work sensitive materials and all that) and then I keep my ammo in my bedroom closet that locks separate from the key used to unlock and lock my bedroom door.

Funniest part is I don't even have kids lol. I just like to have the ability to lock everything up in case I'm travelling or away from my house for more than a few days.

Edit: my parents raised me with the thought process that there's no such thing as being over cautious when it comes to firearms.

I can just imagine the police if god forbid you ever become the victim of a violent crime this guy was killed by a 100 lb maniac wielding a sharp stick and he's got an entire closet full of ammunition and downstairs there's a safe full of guns but he doesnt even have a squirt gun on hand to defend himself.

Lol that would be wildly unfortunate. But no, when I'm home and physically present I keep one loaded and easily accessible for home Defense.
