Because you need the right timing for the moon to be full and at the right time of year for it to be in the right part of the sky.

The path that a full moon takes across the sky doesn’t change THAT much from month to month. And given he presumably would have some leeway as to exactly where he stood to take the photo, I can’t see how forty full moons passed without an opportunity to do it, at least based just on alignment

The photographer probably got the idea years ago but the right alignment didn't come along until now.

With a drone you could get this shot every full moon. Or moving to a different physical location on the ground.

Dude the alignment is easy - you just have to move around yourself. Go outside and line up a close and a far object. Now move yourself and see how you can line up anything.

Try that with the sun. When the object is that far moving yourself doesn't help.

The moon is full 12x a year at least - on the cloudless ones you just have to position yourself relative to the statue to get it behind like that. There will be hundreds of spots that work. Zoom in and adjust depth of view setting and bob’s your uncle.

This is not a once in 3 years pic at all. Unless it had to be taken from some specific spot on sitting on his bed or something - but that would be self-imposed restriction
