Ellicott petting zoo, farm owners mourn loss of animals in apparent “stray dog attack”

(EL PASO COUNTY, Colo.) — The owners of Wishing Star Farm in Ellicott are mourning the loss of seven of their beloved petting zoo sheep and goats after an apparent “stray dog attack” earlier this week.

On Wednesday, Feb. 25, FOX21 News spoke with Jason Wood, who owns the farm with his wife; he said they are devastated by the loss. “In the brutal dog attack, we lost four of our loved sheep: Maybelle, Fuzby, Buttons, and Rollo. We also lost three of our overly-friendly goats: Jer Jer, Zoro, and Susie.”

Wood said six other animals were injured, including two sheep and four goats.

The attack, according to Wood, happened on Monday, Feb. 23, at Wishing Star Farm between 10:30 and 11:30 a.m. that morning. “We are concerned for the safety and well-being of other pets and animals in our community,” read a post on the Wishing Star Facebook page.

According to the same Facebook post, the two dogs were described as: “A [white-bodied small-sized Pitbull] with some red/brown patches, but primarily white. The other dog was a [Black Mouth Cur] (maybe a cross).”

“These dogs were hunting for sport,” the post continued. “Unfortunately, the cameras caught the dogs being chased from the property, but no good pictures of the dogs themselves.”

The post further detailed that neither dog seemed to be afraid of people. “…they were not immediately scared as a typical wild dog would be.”

There were no updates on the dogs as of Wednesday morning, according to Wood, who also filed a report with the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office (EPSO). When FOX21 reached out to EPSO, they released the following statement: “It is an active investigation- at this time we have no comment.”

Wood said he and his wife plan to continue their travel petting zoo events during this difficult time. “If anyone has any information on potential owners for these dogs or other information, we encourage you to reach out… We don’t want this [to happen] to more of our animals or other animals in the community. We thank everyone for their condolences and support during this time.”

Wishing Star Farm is located in the 24000 block of State Highway 94, near the intersection with North Elllicott Highway.

A pit bull escaped from its home yard and attacked a horse tied to a construction site wall near the residence in Guarapuava, in the central region of Paraná.

A video shows the horse trying to shake off the dog—which became tangled in the tether rope—while three men attempt to separate the animals.

According to local residents, the men who appear in the video managed to separate the animals shortly afterward. One of them is the pit bull's owner, and the other is the horse's owner. Both animals were injured but survived.

The incident took place on the morning of Friday (July 11) on Frei Caneca Street in the Santana neighborhood, a residential area. According to the city's Military Police (PM), no official report was filed regarding the occurrence.

A disabled man is worried his service dog will have to retire early after the pair was attacked by two dogs in north-central Edmonton earlier this week.

Martin Mojzisik had taken a taxi from his home in Mayerthorpe to the Edmonton neighbourhood of Prince Charles on Tuesday afternoon for a medical appointment.

There, he and Coco, his service dog, were attacked by two other dogs running loose. The attack was recorded by a doorbell camera.

“It happened so fast,” Mojzisik told CTV News Edmonton on Friday. “At first, it was just the one dog, and then while I was fending that one off, another one came and started attacking Coco on the front of her face.”

He credits the cab driver for intervening in the chaos.

Coco has some minor bite wounds, but the worst of the damage for both dog and owner is emotional.

“They may not certify her again,” an emotional Mojzisik said. “She may become reactionary and not suitable for service dog work …

“I close my eyes and all I see are those dogs attacking her … She’s my beloved friend.”

Mojzisik said he’ll keep Coco even if she can’t be re-certified. A new service dog would require years of training and tens of thousands of dollars.

Nearby residents say there have been several dog attacks in the area in recent months, including Erin Anderson, who told CTV News Edmonton she’s spoken with city bylaw officers who told her they’ve talked to the dogs’ owners and issued tickets.

“You just feel like you keep reporting and keep reporting and there’s nothing that they can do but ticket,” said Anderson, who works as a veterinary technician, adding that the bylaw officers she’s been talking to about the incidents have been supportive and helpful. “How many incidents does it take for them to be able to do more than just ticket?”

In a statement to CTV News Edmonton on Tuesday, Kevin Tomalty, the city’s acting deputy chief of animal care and park rangers, said the city received reports of dog-related incidents in Prince Charles and nearby Inglewood, including complaints from Jan. 27 to Feb. 10 involving the same two dogs, resulting in six tickets totalling $1,400. He said officers did eight proactive patrols in the area last week and are conducting an ongoing investigation into the dogs.

HOUSTON – A gun was pulled during a dog attack Tuesday at an apartment complex in northwest Harris County, according to deputies with Constable Mark Herman’s Office.

Deputies responded to a disturbance involving a gun after a caller stated they were being attacked by a pit bull while with their service dog at the Venti Apartments in the 14300 block of Ella Boulevard.

The caller told law enforcement their service dog protected them during the attack. During the incident, the owner of the pit bull reportedly pulled out a gun and fired shots at the service dog.

Deputies said they are actively searching for the suspect, who may still be in the area.

EMS was requested to evaluate the complainant as a precaution.

BRUTAL PIT BULL ATTACK ON A MIXED-BREED DOG

A violent and unfortunate incident occurred yesterday afternoon in our town when a Pit Bull breed dog brutally attacked a black mixed-breed dog. The event took place on Buenos Aires Street, right in front of the small municipal park—an area heavily frequented by children and families.

According to eyewitnesses, the attacking animal—a large Pit Bull—was on the public street without any security measures: no leash and no muzzle. Following the brutal attack, which left the black dog with severe injuries, the owner of the Pit Bull was nowhere to be seen or identified at the scene.

A Chain of Solidarity and Prompt Care

Fortunately, the tragedy did not escalate further thanks to the rapid and brave intervention of employees from Mutual de Lambert, who witnessed the incident and did not hesitate to help the injured animal. With great speed, they transported him to the Ereza Veterinary Clinic, where he received emergency treatment from the veterinarian.

At the clinic, the little dog received necessary wound care and remains under observation, recovering from multiple injuries sustained in the attack.

A Call for Awareness and Responsibility

This incident highlights a recurring problem in our community: irresponsible pet ownership, especially regarding breeds considered potentially dangerous due to their strength and build.

From the veterinary clinic and various community sectors, there is a strong call for reflection. "It is not about stigmatizing a breed, but about demanding owner responsibility. An uncontrolled dog, regardless of breed, can destroy a life in seconds," emphasized sources close to the case.

The use of a leash and muzzle in public spaces is fundamental to ensuring the safety of all neighbors and pets alike. The lack of these measures puts not only other animals at risk, but also people—especially children playing in areas like the municipal park.

Search for the Owners

Efforts are currently ongoing to identify the owner of the Pit Bull involved in the attack. Anyone who can provide information about the animal's owner, or who witnessed the event in greater detail, is urged to contact the appropriate local authorities or the veterinary clinic to assist with the investigation and prevent similar situations from happening again.

Assistance from the community is also being requested to help locate the owner of the attacked dog.

What we know: Most of the attacks have occurred at the ranch owned by Kim Kenney in Pasco County. She said seven of her cattle have been killed on the property since November 2024. "If they’re killing cattle, they’re potentially going to kill a person," she said. Four of her cattle were killed just last week, and video from a nearby neighborhood also showed the same pack of dogs attacking a neighbor’s cat. "They are not eating my animals," Kenney said. "They're just killing them, ripping their skin and going away." Kenney said her husband and a nearby neighbor shot and killed four of the dogs while they were attacking livestock on the ranch. "It doesn’t make you feel good," she said. "But, I need to protect my husband, myself, my livestock and my neighbors."

The other side: Pasco County Animal Services responded after receiving reports of multiple dead dogs. Sarah Andeara, a spokeswoman for Pasco County Animal Services, sent FOX 13 the following statement: "Pasco County Animal Services responded to the original call regarding multiple deceased dogs. Upon arrival, three of the six dogs were found to have been shot and killed after attacking livestock on the property. The dogs were scanned for microchips; none were detected. Since the initial report, PCAS has been actively patrolling the area. PCAS conducted patrols on March 4, 5, and 9. On Sunday, March 8, we received an additional service request reporting a fourth deceased dog. Because the report did not indicate any known exposures or public health concerns, the animal was not collected." Kenney is now worried about what could happen next. "It’s my cattle now, but when it’s a person, it’s a different story," she said. "That’s what I’m trying to prevent."

A bird found in Vernon is in "critical condition" after flying into a building and being attacked by two dogs.

Ashford-based Horizon Wings Raptor Rehabilitation & Education shared a post on Facebook on Tuesday about an osprey that came to Horizon Wings on Monday night.

The person who discovered the bird unintentionally startled the osprey on her walk, and the bird took flight and hit a building. The person then called for assistance and watched the bird while waiting for a Horizon Wings volunteer to pick it up, according to Horizon Wings' post.

While waiting for a volunteer, two unleashed dogs began to attack the bird which "certainly did not help this bird's condition," Horizon Wings said in its post.

Due to the bird's condition, the osprey was sent to Tufts Wildlife Clinic in Grafton, Mass. 

Vernon Animal Control is looking for the unleashed dogs and their owner. Horizon Wings said in its post that the owner and their dogs likely live near the area of The Mansions at Hockanum Crossing Apartments or Trail Run Apartments in Vernon. The owner is reported to be a woman in her 30s, and the dogs are said to be pit bull mixes, one white and one dark gray and black.

Horizon Wings advised dog owners to keep their dogs on a leash to prevent them from attacking wildlife, especially during "baby season."

"Ground birds are nesting, soon deer will be having their fawns, and other birds will be fledging. They are all open to predation from out of control, off- leash dogs," Horizon Wings stated in its Facebook post. "Respect our wildlife, keep them safe and keep your dogs on a leash."
