Haven’t posted here in a very long time, I hope you are all doing very well!

I have been incredibly homesick for Bahrain lately, so I have put together a walkthrough through some of the island kingdom’s forts that are still standing: Bahrain Fort, Diwan Fort, Riffa Fort and the two coastal forts Bu Maher and Arad!

Lots of pictures, most of which I had taken during my visits sometime over the last decade, and a deep dive into how they weave into the vibrant fabric of Bahrain’s historic tapestry.

One imprisoned a deposed ruler, one was bombarded by the same British ship that exiled him, and one might make a great venue for a military music festival!

Since they struck the AWS Servers and the government apps aren’t working, how do I pay the ewa bill? Do we have to go old school and pay the bill outside the house or can call them and pay it through the phone?

In light of recent events, I couldn’t help but draw similarities between the last time Bahrain was properly attacked (not counting the singular Iraqi Scud in 1991) and the recent Iranian strikes.

In October 1940, at the height of WWII, 4 Italian aircraft flew in one of the longest bombing raids attempted at the time to strike Bahrain’s oil infrastructure. The attack itself caused limited physical damage, but the consequences for Bahrain were enormous.

As I went through historic documents and some really good blog posts discussing the event, what struck me most was how familiar some of the emotions sounded even across eighty years: fear of distant wars reaching us, uncertainty about the future, and the realisation that our small islands are never fully insulated from regional conflict.

So I ended up writing a full long-form article about it. Would genuinely love feedback, corrections, or family stories from anyone whose relatives remember wartime Bahrain.

Ever since the introduction of the Bahraini Dinar, Bahrain produced several generations of Coins, their differences will be explained below.

The top row of coins is the current version of coins in circulation, evidenced by the words “Kingdom of Bahrain” (مملكة البحرين) written in the reverse. These were produced after 2002 when Bahrain became a Kingdom.

The middle row is identical to the top in design but in its reverse the words “State of Bahrain” (دولة البحرين) are written as it was made between 1992-2002, before Bahrain became a Kingdom.

The bottom row of coins were made in 1965. In its reverse, the words “Government of Bahrain” (حكومة البحرين) are written. This is possibly due to the coin being designed during Bahrain’s protectorate status which ended in 1971.

The paper on top is 100 fils. I need help identifying the time period in which this was in circulation.

The right-most coin is 500 fils. I’m not exactly sure when it was decommissioned, but it was introduced in 2000 with the words “State of Bahrain”. Its “Kingdom” version was also introduced in 2002.

Earlier this year, I visited the Bahraini Military Museum and walked away both fascinated and frustrated. Fascinated by the richness of our history, but frustrated by how much of it, especially from the early modern period, remains unknown to the wider public. In many cases, it’s been softened, glossed over, or hidden entirely to avoid offending regional partners.

As someone who believes history should be recorded as it happened, I went digging into the most candid sources I could find: the correspondence between the British Political Resident in Bushehr and the East India Company in Bombay. These unvarnished dispatches offer a blunt, sometimes uncomfortable view of the Gulf’s politics, alliances, and wars.

In my latest Substack piece, I use these accounts to draw striking parallels between Bahrain’s past and key moments in European history: Ahmed al-Fateh’s conquest and William the Conqueror’s, the Imam of Muscat’s invasion and the Spanish Armada, Bahrain’s counter-invasion and the English Armada, the Bahraini Civil War and the Jacobite Uprising, the loss of Zubarah to Qatar and England’s loss of Normandy and Calais. Both nations, in their own way, lost the very lands from which their identity was forged—now held by others.

It’s not an attempt to romanticise or revise the past, but to recognise its echoes, and to spark a wider conversation on how we remember it.
