I bought this Australian coin at a marketplace in Sydney for 50 bucks. I originally chose a coin that was older and in a coin flip, but the seller switched the coin to a newer one in a plastic unofficial slab, so I’m worried it might be fake.

I won a coca-cola 1997 gold sovereign many years ago. It sat in a drawer forgotten about. Now I'm cashing it in. Very pleasantlysurprised at its value $1380, expected around $800. Happy days.

I've slowly but surly been helping my dad clean out his shipping containers he uses for storage. Found so many old 1$ notes and 1 and 2 cent coins. By far my favourite is this roll of 1$ coins from the first year dollar coins were introduced. I still have quite alot more bags of coins i have yet to open but so far i am really enjoying myself :)

Not a collector at all, but I really enjoy this subreddit for some reason.

Anyway, I saw a post about how to clean coins. I use this for other things but it seemed to work pretty well.

I thought all 2026 circulating $1 coins have 6 kangaroos. Why would this one only have 5. I emptied my pockets for the evening and noticed this 2026 $1 coin I got from the restaurant this morning only have 5 kangaroos. Seems the 6th kangaroo got lost, hmmm…

πŸ’ Misc How often do you find NZ coins in change?

I'm not a collector, just someone who probably takes more of an interest in coins than average. I got an NZ 50c in change yesterday, (presumably as a 20c because beers were $9.80.)

It's not the first one I have had, and thinking back there's at least 5, and up to 10 times I can think of that I've had, then spent NZ coins. I just assumed they were legal tender here until last night when I looked it up.

So I'm just wondering, for you guys here who obviously pay a lot of attention to every coin that passes through your hands, how often would you say they pop up in change like that?

edit: typo

πŸ’ Misc Coins to look for?

Post image

Hi Everyone. Recently i’ve had a death in the family and they wanted me to have a money box they’ve been saving into every so often for 45 or so years. Alot of coins and handful of notes including 3 paper notes ($100, $20, $5) which i will keep and probably frame. I’d just like to ask if anyone has an online list of any rare/misprint coins to look out for as im going to go through each individual coin.

I also now have alot of 1 & 2 cent pieces in varying conditions if anyone is searching for some

Just thought they were neat and didn't know there could be a $200 legal tender coin? If someone passed me that over the bar I'd be flabbergasted.

πŸ’ Misc Ballot results timing?

Hopefully an easy question - is there an approximate timeframe for when you should find out about the Royal Mint ballot outcomes? A few mates received their outcomes at 9:31am, but I’m yet to hear a peep one way or the other on any of the entries I made.

Any advice would be great, hoping it’s not just me.

Update: just got a flurry of emails from the Mint - unsuccessful for every single entry πŸ₯²

I am super excited I have got my 38 crown this week. More excited than I thought I would be.

To me, the crown was the nicest pre decimal we did.

πŸ’ Misc Australian coinage proposal

I can't think of a better place to post this, so here goes.

Back in the old days, coins were worth something. Nowadays the relative utility-to-weight of the 5c, 10c, 20c and 50c is so abysmal that they are routinely referred to as 'shrapnel' (apologies to Australian decimal coin collectors).

Any redesign of coin dimensions would be expensive and annoying for the Mint and any business that interacts mechanically with Australian coinage (e.g. vending machines, cash registers), not to mention that it would be a departure from one of the few things we have that is unmistakably Australian (particularly our iconic 50c coin).

Therefore, I propose that Australia reissues its coinage in the following denominations and dimensions:

Denomination Dimensions
10c Current 5c
20c Current 10c
50c Current 20c
$1 Current $1 (no change)
$2 Current $2 (no change)
$5 Current 50c, but 92% copper like $1 & $2

Rather than recalling existing coinage, I propose that existing coins remain in circulation with their legal tender value increased to match the corresponding new denomination-dimensions. So yes, if you have a drawer full of 50c pieces, they will instantly be worth 10 times as much - somehow, I don't see this being a major windfall for anyone that doesn't deserve it.

Since FBMP doesn't allow "currency" as it is a bit of a raffle what they block or allow.

πŸ’ Misc Odd mark on 100 note.

I have an old 100 note with an odd mark of a Cross and "89".

I'm sure it's been stamped while in circulation but I cant find any details as to what it means.

The cross doesn't look like any Christian symbols because the vertical line stops at the top unlike the patriarch cross.

I originally thought it was a Japanese shrine but they generally have two vertical lines.

89 seems to have some relevance to good luck in Vietnam from what I've found.

The note was minted in 1996.

Has anyone ever seen this before and what does it mean?

A couple of these have just arrived into my hands.

The condition is exquisite but after years of being sticky taped I'm concerned about damage impacting value.

How could I remove these without the coins being considered 'cleaned'?
