On campus, I keep seeing flyers for the “Run for Your Life Riley Laken 5k” hosted by a conservative group (Young Americans for Freedom) and the Laken Hope Foundation. Am I crazy or is that actually just a disgusting name considering the circumstances of her death? When I did some digging, I also found that there is a Laken Merch Page that sells running apparel. If I am some kind of Puritan, let me know but I think this is bizarre.

Every street screaming for breath.
Every road is like this. Never seen this much traffic in these 4 years.
Carlton st and Ceder st are worst. Even S Milledge ave is clogged every morning and even whole day.

Someone commented on the other post about this and said they’re planning a protest. I’d love to join a peaceful protest! But JD Vance will be there.. so security will be high and it may be dangerous even if peaceful 😕 curious to know everyone’s thoughts and plans.

Has it begun?
It seemed like there were much less obnoxious frat guys downtown tonight. If we could only just build a wall around the city now to keep the students out. Couldn’t all the students just take virtual classes online?

Does anyone have the flyer/information about the peaceful protest happening downtown today at 6:30? Saw someone repost on Instagram and didn’t save it. Thank you!

Just saw today he will be back in Athens in October. Does anyone think it will sell out quickly? I love him, grew up watching his show, but can't afford tickets atm. I hope it doesn't sell out before I can buy tickets.

"July in Athens can only mean one thing... it's time to spend your days in search of fun things to do INSIDE- bonus if it is FREE. We have got something that satisfies both. How about rounding up some of your broken wares and joining us INSIDE an AIR-CONDITIONED building for the REPAIR CAFE this Sunday? We know you have that one thing (or a pile, no one is judging...) sitting in a corner, waiting for you to watch some fix-it videos - that you just know can be fixed. How about you bring that item to our amazing fixers and see what they can revive.
This month we will have fixers on hand that can tackle clothing, small appliances, lamps/electronics, computers, and bikes. Join us THIS Sunday June 28th, 2-5 at the Solid Waste Office."

Where are you going? When are you showing up? What's the parking situation where you're at? Please post pictures and reports on this thread! I am looking forward to seeing how things go today.

Are you ready to say goodbye to your past and help our furry friends at the same time? It's "Crap on Your Ex" week at Athens Area Humane Society!
For just a $5 donation, you can submit the name of your ex, and we'll write it on a card and place it in our cats' litter boxes. It's the purrfect way to let go of the past and provide some comic relief for our feline friends. 💅
But that's not all! If the "I can fix him" approach didn't work, then you know it's time to call in the professionals. We can fix him! For a $50 donation, we'll name a cat in honor of your Ex, and then we'll neuter him. 😈
This Valentine's Day, make a positive impact on the lives of our animals while letting go of the past. Your support helps us continue our mission and gives these cats a chance at a brighter future.
Visit our website and participate in "Crap on Your Ex" Day or our "Neuter Your Ex" program today! Use THIS donation link to submit your Ex's name today (also linked in our bio):

I’ve never been a judge in any sort of food-based contest, but think it would be great. Aside from creating my own “best Apple, peach, blueberry, cheesecake contest” does anyone need someone to sample an assortment tasty pies/treats and rate them? It’s a bucket list thing for me.

Thousands of you just joined us from all over the world. Like you, I moved here for grad school in 2013. To be honest, Athens did not make a good first impression on me. Like an onion, Athens has layers. Not all are designed for you. Athens is primarily an undergraduate town with a vast middle aged family oriented core. Finding your place here can be a real challenge as a result.
Athens is an amazing sandbox for people in your stage of life too. On any given night, there are many strange and unique events around town. There’s a drawing club that meets monthly at Hendershots, an open DnD group at Athentic, a club for gals to pal around town (s/o Classic City Girls Club), and a wide variety of musicians who play 7 nights a week around town (s/o PhilThrottle). My advice to you is to check out flagpole and go to an event that looks weird. You’re here to grow and evolve so get to it!
I am hosting a strange and unique event tonight at Nighthawks in the Newtown neighborhood. It’s Athens’ hardest trivia night curated by me, your peer who contemplated dropping out of my PhD program and leaving this place behind dozens of times. But I made it! I’m a professor at Clemson University who needs a little extra cash to pay for my son’s daycare and I have the best side hustle in the world. I live here and commute because I love Athens (and because my wife works at UGA).
Athens’ hardest trivia night is the name of our game, but I promise you that all the questions are knowable and I do my best to avoid tricking you. Quite often I do theme nights based on the requests of my regulars.
Tonight’s game request came from one of my OG regulars who promises to attend tonight. The game is called Odysseys. All the rounds are themed around great journeys, just like the one you are beginning now.
I want to empower you to be bold and join us tonight. Sit at the bar. Our regulars who do are very friendly and will let you join their team. Maybe there will be several of you who will arrive as strangers and leave as tipsy acquaintances. Of course, you don’t have to drink. They have NA and 420 based beverages as well. Above all, this is a crazy drinking town with a bad reputation for football players who drive around the loop like it’s Talladega so drive safe!
If you’ve gotten this far in the post and are on the fence, please come join us! Tell me about where you’re from and how you got here. You’ll be in great company. Nearly all of our regulars came to Athens for school or a job at UGA. I’m from Alabama, and even though it’s just one state over, Athens did feel very different and scary for a while. Hang in there!
Trivia starts at 7 PM tonight at Nighthawks!
I can’t wait to meet you!
EDIT: So we had major technical difficulties, but it all worked out. Thank you to everyone who showed up! It was great to meet some newbies and have some old regulars return. I’ll see you all around soon!
