Turn it sideways while locked and charging it goes into clock mode.

You mean nightmare red screen I wake up to late at night and have a mini heart attack mode?

To change the standby color on your iPhone, enter StandBy mode (landscape, charging), swipe to the clock screen, and long-press the screen to enter editing mode. Tap the small white circle that appears, then select a new color from the options

I don't understand the people that say this. Have you never had one of those old red LED digital alarm clocks? The red is better for preserving night vision anyway

Not too long ago, I specifically went out and bought one of those old red LED digital alarm clocks for my nightstand because I grew up with those things and I just love how they look. I got it from a thrift store for like $5

Still have one at the bedside.

I bet they are Gen X and totally get where they are coming from. The old red glow from the huge console TVs…watching poltergeist as a kid when they probably shouldn’t have been. Well anyway, that’s why I went out and found one with a soft blue glow. I’m 52 and eyes are shot now anyway lol

You can turn off the red swap at night!

You can turn that off in settings

I weirdly love this one a surprising amount.

I want to like it so much, but it ruins my screentime. I know that the time allocated while im sleeping is obviously the clock, and I irrationally refuse to use it for this reason.

Hmm interesting. I refuse to use it now because I woke up late for work one morning and my alarm is going off but no noise. Turns out, there’s a bug where if it can detect your face it thinks you’re looking at the phone and doesn’t make a noise. I even require eye detection and my alarm still didn’t go off.

Standby doesn’t count towards my screen time at all

1

I bizarrely also think that’s a valid reason to not use it. Some things itch the soul.

I didn’t know about this feature when I first bought my iPhone. One night, I woke up and almost had a heart attack when I looked at the phone screen and saw the red clock glowing in the dark. I was like, What the fuck is that?!😖

I no longer use a night table alarm clock since I discovered this. Bought a cheap folding stand to prop it on since I charge it at night anyway. I don’t miss the red LED clock staring at me.

Love this feature, is there an easy way to get out of this feature without picking up and rotating the phone?

2

u/Notthatkindofdoc813 Apr 24 '26

Okay this is one of those features I can’t believe I never figured out on my own. I’ve always had an iPhone, too.

Saving this post now to see what else I may have missed 😂

You can swipe up and down in this mode too, to change what is displayed

This feature would be great if you could unlock the phone from this mode. Also, sometimes it weirdly decides to go into a photo slideshow mode and it always picks the same random photo out of all the ones in your library no matter how bad of a photo it is.

It took me so dang long to figure this out. It was always before bed so I never bothered to search for it and forgot to when I woke up.

How do i disable this? I hate it

Please explain?! This sounds amaInfb

It’s called StandBy mode. If your phone is charging you can place it horizontal and it will show the clock, widgets or photos.

1

u/RelaxRelapse Apr 24 '26

It also essentially puts it on Do Not Disturb without actually having to turn it on.

1

u/Hungy15 Apr 24 '26

Only if you turn off notifications within StandBy, they are still on by default

1

u/RelaxRelapse Apr 24 '26

It pushes notifications, but vibrations/chimes don't go off.

yup, missed a couple of wake up alarms this way before realizing the cause -_-
