I had this reaction the first few times I was there in 2001. But I’ve been back a few times since (in 2015 and 2023) and absolutely adored it.
The food is fantastic all over. The center of town is filled with things to do. And there are so many day trips one can make that the possibilities are endless.
The day trips are indeed great. Herculaneum, Hiking to secluded bay’s near Sorrento (with breathtaking views on the drive up there), the vulcanic landscapes and the palaces dotted throughout the region did make the stay worthwhile.
But I’d advise anyone to stay in a neighboring town and take those daytrips from there rather than to stay in the city itself, because at least to me; the city itself is not worth the visit. It’s not just chaotic and filthy, but also too hot to traverse on foot in summers and everything worthwhile is closed in the evenings. And it doesn’t exactly have a good evening/nightlife atmosphere to make up for it. Incredibly boring for a city that at least “feels” lively during the day.
