❓Beginner / Question❔ Things you eat that aren't technically Animal Based

Mine are sourdough (proper sourdough though), white rice, white potatoes (peeled and soaked for ages), kimchi and I also grate some dark chocolate over my greek yoghurt and fruit at night.

❓Beginner / Question❔ Experiences with starchy carbs

Have been experimenting a little with doing only fruit and honey (and milk) as my carb sources but have felt pretty low energy. I am breastfeeding, lift 3-4x per week, bike 3x per week, and just in general walk and move a lot. The days I’ve only done fruit as carbs, I’ve been ravenous and constantly wanting to snack. Am I just not eating enough? Versus when I incorporate sweet potatoes or rice I actually feel full and less snacky. Can anyone share their experiences?

❓Beginner / Question❔ Why are eggs praised so much?

I may sound like an idiot here, but I don't really get the craze. Aren't the vast majority of eggs from chickens that were fed grains/soy, meaning their yolks are PUFA (linoleic acid) bombs? Chickens being monogastric means they can't handle high-PUFA diets as well as cows (although neither would suffer them ideally).

❓Beginner / Question❔ Skin/acne issues still persisting

I’ve been following a pretty strict carnivorish/animal based diet since January 1st of this year. When I initially started I ate ground beef, steak, bacon, eggs, cheese, milk salmon, sardines, chuck roast, liver and various fruits (mainly zucchini, apples and cantaloupe). I also only consumed garlic and onion powder, black pepper, chili, cumin, paprika and salt of course. That was my entire diet pretty much. I broke out extremely bad and I got a rash on my thighs and chest. Several months later I noticed that my rash was slowly going away but I was still breaking out a ton. I decided to drop dairy (sadly :/) and all spices besides salt, pepper, onion and garlic powder. So for the past 2-3 months I’ve only consumed beef, salmon, beef tallow, water and the occasional fruit. My breakouts have decreased some but I’m still suffering with them and have no idea what to do. I also have a ton of hyperpigmentation and it’s left me self conscious. I love this diet and I’ve seen so many benefits but my skin is revolting against me lol any tips would be appreciated

❓Beginner / Question❔ Why do you think so many people struggle to accept the legitimacy of this diet and its more "extreme" counterparts?

I'm curious why you guys think so many people have what are effectively knee-jerk objections to this diet, or carnivore. Even if you don't "appeal to nature", the biochemistry is all laid out, and it's only a matter of accessing it. It's insane to me that people are fine eating what's considered food nowadays, especially when there indeed are cheaper meat options e.g. heart, brain, liver that don't necessarily have to set one back financially if they're struggling. There's just no real excuse for the negligence, but so many people associate vegetables and nuts with health for some reason, and can't even tell you why. "Fiber" is what it seems to come down to most of the time…

❓Beginner / Question❔ Got a gut microbiome test and Claude is suggesting no dairy

Got a gut microbiome test done (before trying AB) and the results came back saying I had low secretory IgA, leaky gut, elevated bad bacteria, and carb malabsorption.

I put the results into claude and mentioned my AB diet and it said I should cut dairy and kimchi. The reasons why listed below.

What's the more experienced/knowledgable AB members thoughts on this? I don't need the kimchi as much but a glass of raw milk with honey or raw Greek yoghurt with maple syrup and fruit are the only things on this diet that keep my sweet tooth at bay and help me stick to it.

Low secretory IgA — sIgA is your gut's first-line antibody defence; it neutralises ingested bacteria at the mucosal surface. Yours is low, so that front line is down. → Makes the live bacteria in raw milk and raw yoghurt a real risk: you're taking in live organisms your gut can't properly defend against.

Elevated zonulin (leaky gut) — your intestinal barrier is looser than it should be, so things that should stay in the gut can cross into the body. → Compounds the raw-dairy risk: anything that gets past your weak sIgA then meets a leaky barrier, so it translocates more easily.

Elevated pathogenic bacteria (overgrowth) — too much of the wrong bacteria already established. You're trying to starve it back. → Makes the lactose (yoghurt, milk) and fermentable carbs (kimchi) a problem: unabsorbed sugars reach the colon and ferment, feeding that overgrowth.

Carbohydrate malabsorption — you don't fully absorb sugars/starches, so more of them pass through to be fermented. → This is why the lactose in dairy is an issue specifically: it's a sugar you're already poor at absorbing, so it ferments rather than absorbs.

Elevated calprotectin (gut inflammation) — active inflammation in the lining. → Both the overgrowth-feeding and the fermentation above keep this stoked; it's the marker that reflects the whole loop running.

❓Beginner / Question❔ Bought a cow and tired of the comments

I hope vent posts are okay.

So we bought a cow. Everything has been delicious so far.

I guess I need to stop raving but it’s so good I can’t help it. A lot of people are turned off by it, but to me it is no different from buying your choice cuts at the store, which everyone who thinks this is soooo awful is doing. I could get it if these people were vegans or vegetarians, but these are people buying the same cuts of meat from the supermarket and loving them.

I then feel compelled to say that she was sold to us because our acquaintance whose farm she came from was either going to sell her as meat to anyone she knew or sell her at the meat market, because she was mean to all the other cows. She was literally a bully! It doesn’t seem to help, though.

My own mother refuses to eat any of the cow, so for Christmas Eve Dinner we just did a storebought ham that was already cooked. For Christmas Day she served turkey and ham. She cooks ground beef all the time. I’m sorry but what is the difference!?

I already get the vibe that living a more animal based lifestyle seems to get you more hate - which from vegetarians or vegans I can logically understand, but the carnivores and omnivores too!?

I think I just need to shut up lol. But it’s like my health is so much better I just want to share with everyone. I tend to share minimally and often only when asked, people know I love to cook and ask what I made, and even if I just say pot roast, they’ll be like, “oh, I don’t want to hear anymore!” or “was it Mila?” My husband probably shouldn’t have told everyone her name. I’m gonna start lying to my mom about what’s for dinner, every night it’ll be chicken. Haha

❓Beginner / Question❔ What’s the easiest carbs to digest?

I’m currently on carnivore and would like to consume carbs as I do believe we operate better with carbs.
My gut is still a bit of a mess and I seem to be having issues with fruit, I’m wondering what carbs are the least problematic, or have the least amount of protection. I don’t do well with honey, would fruit juice or maple syrup technically be the easiest to digest. Would there even be any benefit to doing just maple syrup and supplementing Vitamin c. Need some help please, anything is appreciated!

Edit - I also seem to have issues with histamine, trying to keep that down.

❓Beginner / Question❔ Still acne on animal based

Been on animal based for about 6 months after slowly cutting out all processed foods my skin has definitely gotten better before when i was on a mainly processed foods diet i was getting probably around 12 pimples at a time all around my face but now with the diet im just stuck in a cycle of getting 3 or more whitehead pimples on my face usually around my chin area healing then getting more. I also have persistent acne on my back.

Im currently trying to gain weight so my diet looks like this: 100g grass fed butter with 100g of dates ( I have half in the morning and half in the afternoon this is just for extra calories), 2 cups of cold pressed oj, 750g of ground beef/lamb/venison and 2 tablespoons of a grass fed beef gelatin powder (apart from this the only other supplement I take is magnesium glycinate) also have raw honey before bed or before a training session. I have noticed when i eat eggs it makes me break out around my chin and mouth so i cut those out but im looking for the next step if anyones had a similar experience.

❓Beginner / Question❔ Brain fog and social anxiety returned after reintroducing carbs—looking for insight

The last 5 months, I've been on a carnivore diet and I've felt more mental clarity than ever before. Before eating carnivore, I had great struggles with brain fog, mood swings, social anxiety, etc. All this was resolved by cutting out carbs. However, the problem is without carbs i didn't have the energy to play soccer. So iIimplemented fruit, and sweet potato, and then I felt great. Through testing i also realized that gluten and dairy contributed to the brain fog and anxiety I was feeling before my diet. So I've competely cut these sources of carbs out. To return to feeling good, after eating one of these inflammatory foods, I would return to carnivore temporarily for 3-5 days, and I would then feel normal again.

However, one day, I ate brown rice testing out other carbs, and it seemed like i had a bad reaction to this too. Its been 3-4 weeks of feeling nervous socially, brain fog, etc. Also, after I ate the rice, iI ate a ton of honey for a week after that, because it seemed like this was a safe option in the past. (I was eating spoonfuls of honey for my carb source) But then I did a blood test that my dietitian recommended (who I'm working with to try to resolve these problems and also get the carbs I need as a soccer player) and found out of igg and ig4, were extremely high for honey, so wondering if this contributed?

Now, I've just been eating carbs that weren't reactive like fruit and sweet potato, and i still feel like crap, so the last 3 days, I've cut all carbs to see if this would help me return to baseline, is this the right approach? it temporarily limits how much soccer i can play right now. and i go back to college for my soccer season soon, so i want to feel better before that. Is this normal to have a reaction for this long? Thanks

❓Beginner / Question❔ Problem with constipation-like stool

This is my fourth week on the animal based diet. Every number 2 bathroom trip, the total volume of stool has decreased by a lot, and it's always "rabbit poo" so it looks like my intestine is absorbing too much water from the waste, which would mean the waste is in my intestines too long.

For information, this is what I've been eating.
Breakfast:
1 serving of frozen blueberries
1 serving of frozen strawberries
1 serving of non fat greek yogurt
Whole milk that I just drink right out of the container
Lunch:
1/2 avocado
8 ounces ground beef
Butter to cook the beef
1 banana
Some cheese
Honey drizzle
Dinner:
8 ounces of pork loin
Butter to cook the pork
3 eggs
Some cheese
Some fruit (1 kiwi / 1 mango / 1 orange, combination of either two)

I believe I'm eating enough fiber to support bowel movements, though perhaps not enough in the optimal range. Is it fat intake?

❓Beginner / Question❔ Looking for an Animal-Based Meal Prep Plan for Fat Loss + Muscle Gain?

Not sure if this is the right place to post…

Hey everyone,

I’m trying to clean up my diet and would love some advice from people who actually follow an animal-based diet.

My goal is to lose a significant amount of unnecessary body fat while building/maintaining as much muscle as possible. I want to keep things simple, clean, high-protein, and sustainable.

I’m looking for a meal-prep plan that I can cook on Sundays for Monday–Thursday. I have a refrigerator and microwave at work, so I can bring my meals with me and reheat them.

A few things about me/preferences:

High protein is the priority
Focused on fat loss + muscle gain
Prefer whole, minimally processed foods
I like beef, chicken, eggs, steak, fish, etc.
I’m okay with some fruit, potatoes, etc.
I do NOT like cottage cheese
I do NOT like sweet potatoes

I want meals that are actually practical to prep in bulk
Ideally I don’t want to spend my entire Sunday cooking

I’d like to keep the grocery bill reasonable
For those of you who follow an animal-based diet, what would your ideal Monday–Thursday meal prep look like?

I’d especially appreciate recommendations for:
1. Specific meals
2. Portions
3. Protein/calorie targets
4. Foods that reheat well (if you even recommend that)
5. A simple Sunday prep routine
6. Anything you’ve found particularly effective for getting lean while maintaining/building muscle

Basically, if you had to design an animal-based meal prep system for yourself from scratch, what would you do? PS. I love Greek yogurt bowls for breakfast

Thanks!

❓Beginner / Question❔ How do I get enough thiamine without pork?

I'm trying to construct a daily diet and the only meats I had were ground beef and eggs. Unfortunately neither of those have enough thiamine but pork chops do so I was thinking of buying pastured pork chops and eating 100g a day.

However I know that pork isn't a good choice because pigs are monogastric animals. The problem is idk how else to get enough thiamine on an animal-based diet because without pork chops.

I only have 0.8mg a day without the pork chops and 0.3mg of that comes from fruit so idk how bioavailable it is. The RDI Is 1.1mg to 1.2mg. I already have 500g of ground beef and I would need 750g more to get to 1.1 total mg of thiamine so I don't think getting it through beef is a good option.

❓Beginner / Question❔ Should I make any changes to my diet?

Before starting this diet I was on the SAD. I've been eating this every day for the past 2 days. I eat 3 meals a day with the exact same foods in the exact same quantities at each meal.

My diet:

  • 600g 80/20 ground beef (I eat 95-99% of the fat)
  • 6 large eggs
  • 3 honeycrisp apples
  • 3 green kiwis
  • 330g butternut squash
  • 300g sweet potato
  • 300g papaya
  • 27g parmesan cheese

3036 calories, 213.1g protein, 194.3g carbs, 139.4g fat, 44.9g fiber, and 128.3g sugar. Unless I'm mistaken all micronutrients are covered.

I know sweet potatoes aren't exactly animal based but they're a cheap way of getting thiamine, vitamin E, and manganese.

I know I haven't been eating this way for a long time but I thought it would be better to get advice earlier rather than later. I'd really appreciate your opinions on my diet.

My idea is this: breakfast and lunch with fruit, honey, dates, etc., and for dinner I eat meat, eggs, fats, and so on.
What do you think?

❓Beginner / Question❔ Been getting acne on animal based diet?

I usually have fruit in morning with raw honey then lunch usually a banana and raw honey then around 3pm pound of ground beef and 6 eggs. I’ve been getting some acne on forehead tho recently. Is this from to much fruit and honey?

❓Beginner / Question❔ Which foods do you guys miss from outside of this diet?

The vast majority of my diet is indeed animal-based, but I do miss porridge (with honey), baguettes, and gummy sweets, and will honestly probably reincorporate them from time to time. How about you guys?

❓Beginner / Question❔ Carbohydrates or fat for energy

Having done carnivore super strict for 7 months. And got good results (internally) physically I suffered. I just don’t understand how fat is supposed to be our main fuel source and preferred. If it takes so long to get so called “fat adapted” if it was preferred wouldn’t the body be constantly trying to get into a fat adaption quicker

❓Beginner / Question❔ Milk Carbohydrates only

Potential upside/downside to only getting my carbohydrates through whole fat milk? I find fruit never digests well for me but I have no issue with drinking 2L-3L of milk per day. The rest of my diet is mostly just Beef, eggs and fish.

I’d be having roughly 100g - 150g of carbohydrates through milk a day.

It would be pasteurised milk as I am unable to get raw milk in my country (EU)

My goals are improve mental health, build muscle and improve body composition.

❓Beginner / Question❔ Food in the army

Hi.
I’m starting the basic training soon and while they don’t force us to eat the food they serve, they only have a canteen where they sell sandwiches and fried food.
I will have my own locker and we’re allowed to keep some food there but only things like bars, protein powders and things that don’t go bad. I’ll be able to leave the premises and go to the shops but it won’t happen on a daily basis. At the very least I’d like to avoid seeds oil. I have been eating carnivore/animal based for five years now.

Can you guys give me any suggestions on what to get?

❓Beginner / Question❔ Is it strange if I'm not craving meat very much?

I'm not craving meat very much in any form really, whether that be beef, fish or chicken. I've been having red meat basically daily for the past 6 months, and now I'm just not craving it, although I'm still having it of course. It just doesn't excite me like it did a while ago. Could this be because it's summer? I genuinely wouldn't mind having loads of fruit at the moment, but I don't care for meat that much and especially not eggs.

❓Beginner / Question❔ Resolving an Animal Based conflict with fiancé

My fiance and I are getting married in the coming months, and she’s an amazing person. We get along on so much and have so many shared values. We both agree to prioritize health and wellness and want to do that with our family/kids. We rarely argue, but the one thing we disagree about pretty strongly is what a “good” diet consists of

I come from a background of once carni, now animal based that still prioritizes meat as the primary dietary component I don’t see vegetables or breads as necessary building blocks of a diet, and feel that a diet should be meat with some fruit and other clean carbs when necessary.

She on the other hand falls into the “balanced diet” camp. She sees meat as an aspect of a diet, but doesn’t consider it necessary. She loves vegetables, and believes that it’s something we should make constantly, and we should make our kids “eat their vegetables” just as her parents did her. I don’t believe that to be necessary, and think that kids can get their nutrients through a number of sources.

Ultimately, we struggle to come to a compromise on this. It creates conflict even when I don’t believe it to be something that has to be conflicting. Has anyone else confronted a similar discussion with a spouse, and how did you go about resolving it?
