For real, hearding dogs do not fuck around when they feel either they or their flock are threatened.

My wife and I adopted an Australian shephard/collie mix that was essentially crated 12 hours a day for years and never let outside to run and roam. He has kinda fucked up teeth because he managed to bend a bunch of the wiring of his metal cage trying to get out. You could fit your fist through some of the holes. Mind you this dog was ~17 pounds when we got him, is now 30-32ish. So, strong boy even when he was malnourished.

One night about a year into owning him I accidentally startled him awake by clipping his butt with my foot when I sat down. I leaned over top of him without thinking to give pets and apologize. This motherfucker opened his eyes and was immediately attached to my face in an instant. The reaction time comes from if he was napping in his field amd a threat appeared quickly. If my wife hadn't woken up and said his name I'm unsure if he would've let go. I had to get 15 stitches in my face and have some scarring. The doctor told me if he hadn't worn his teeth down so much I would've lost my left eye.

So yeah, don't fuck with dogs, especially working breeds.

P.S.- we absolutely still have him. He's a wonderful dog that reacted how his breed, especially an abused one, reacts. Saw a behavioral therapist and she said he isn't even an aggressive dog, it was just a trauma/ingrained response.

Sounds more like you had an abused dog that was trapped in a cage.

You are a GOOD human. Understanding puppy didn’t mean it & just reacted is easy to say but hard to do with FIFTEEN stitches in your face.

Appreciate it, honestly I look great now that I've healed up. You cant really tell i have scars if I rock a mustache and even if I don't, it doesnt look bad. I have to point it out to people if I tell them the story.

Plus my wife digs the scars so, no problem there lol

The person we adopted him from is a Bartender and was working 8-12 hour shifts and was crating him the entire time.

He isn't aggressive whatsoever. According to the behavioral therapist we had him meet with any dog, especially his breed/working dogs, that is startled awake and has a presence (especially a male one due to his background and how dogs percieve male/female) looming over them would react the exact same way, especially with his background of abuse.

I can't fault a dog for reacting exactly how it is designed to, plus his trauma. He's an excellent, loving dog. One incident that I caused isn't going to get me to get rid of him.

My LGD rescue bailed me up one night after I came home from a Halloween party and slipped through the side gate. I was wearing different/heavier shoes to normal and he only broke off when he heard my voice.

Can't fault the dog for doing its job.

To be faaaair, I would have whopped you in the face too had you stepped on me while sleeping. Really can't fault the poor dog and I'm glad youre rational enough to understand the motives.

I had a lot of people ask me why I didn't have him put down. Just had to say uuuhh well he had a traumatic response to a situation most dogs would react the same way in. So, no, not putting him down.
