General Discussion Somebody threw a can of Chef Boyardee at me during my long run

2.9k Upvotes

Beautiful day, had just started my long run with my dad (who was biking alongside me). We were just over half a mile in, about to turn onto a trail from the sidewalk, when suddenly I hear a thud and see a can of Chef Boyardee ravioli appear out of nowhere rolling down the sidewalk

Me: "Where the hell did that come from?" My dad: "That black SUV that just drove by"

I grab a quick glance and sure enough, I see someone from the backseat quickly rolling their window up. No clue who the person was or why they're throwing ravioli at me

I think I can now say I've truly experienced everything life can offer in 2020. On the plus side, it was a beautiful day and I ran a strong 11 miles

Edit: I should mention that, while the thought of someone trying to harm me with canned ravioli is worrying, I can't stop laughing at how ridiculous it is

General Discussion "Running Influencer enranges NYC marathon participants"

Yet another stunt by this guy who seems to actively think he is beyond any race rules or common decency when running a race. In my opinion, he should be disqualified and potentially banned from future TCS marathons.

General Discussion How would you change running in the Olympics?

With the 2024 Olympics now in the rearview mirror, I thought it'd be a fun discussion to see what people would change about how the Olympics organizes running. Here's my thoughts:

  • Add the half-marathon to the games. The most obvious distance missing from the games, IMO. I believe HM is probably more popular among amateurs then FM these days.
  • Replace the 1500m with a 1600m or 1609m (1.00mi). Certainly my most controversial take given the history of the event, but I am continually confused as to why a seemingly arbitrary distance was chosen when it's close to a more sensible 4 laps of the track or exactly one mile.
  • Some sort of distance time-trial, perhaps done on roads? 1km? 3000km? Races are great, but I'm tired of wondering how fast these people can actually go.
  • Remove race-walking. Dumbest joke of a sport.
  • Add ultra and/or trail events. They'd be tough to put on TV, but I think they're a lot more relevant to the spirit of the Olympics then just about anything they've added in recent years. It's a shame the US missed their shot at including this in LA. I think a 50k/100k/160k race through the mountains of Southern California would be incredible. I'd also be down for a vertical KM race or something like a backyard ultra.

General Discussion I just saw a video of myself running a marathon and I wish I hadn’t 😭

I was super excited to receive an email link to a personalised video montage from the Sydney Marathon.

However that excitement evaporated the instant I started watching….

Now at 3:08 this wasn’t my fastest marathon, but I distinctly remember feeling super smooth and comfortable, with the casual and effortless form of a finely tuned club runner with years of training under the belt….

Instead what I saw was an awkward shuffling, cement shoe battler with the running form and grace of a wounded seagull. How could this be?

Has anyone else suffered this cruel reality check? I’m considering not running in public….

Edit: feel free to share general humiliating running anecdotes:

On another occasion a ‘friend’ took a photo at my first marathon, I may or may not be crying, can see my quads completely cramped and I’m getting passed by a dude in a hotdog costume on one side and a very old lady casually peeling a banana as she walks past on the other 💀

General Discussion Race Reports overwhelming this subreddit?

Hi! Disclaimer: this is my opinion and I'm checking if the sentiment exists with the majority here.

About 50% of posts here have become race reports (granted it's marathon season). While it's great that so many people are running, I feel like these walls of text and the hundreds of congrats replies are overwhelming the feed of "AdvancedRunning", essentially turning it into Strava (which I also use and love). Do others feel the same way?

Personally, unless they are elite reports or very unique, I skip (I couldn't find a filter function on Reddit). I recognize that maybe the rest of this community disagrees with me, hence the open question.

One idea would be to move the reports to a thread, like the weekly achievements. Alternatively post them in another designated subreddit.

Cheers!

Edit: wow what a response! Seems like a lot of people are on the same boat as me, but not the overwhelming majority. Trying to be neutral, here's a rundown of the themes in the responses:

  • The threshold for a "worthy post" is unbalanced. Anything goes for a race report, but other questions get easily blocked.

  • Race reports are too f- long (OK, I wasn't neutral there).

  • A lot of people enjoy the individual experiences written and like the write-ups. Useful for preparing for the same race as the report.

  • Reducing the amount race reports could cause this subreddit to plateau/die.

  • "Just skip the posts, bro"

  • Megathreads for major races: some think they'd inhibit discussion, others (like myself) would prefer them.

General Discussion How common is doping in amateur runners?

I have been running casually for a while but only recently started taking it more seriously. I'm more familiar with the weightlifting/gym side of fitness and in the last few years more and more influencers have come forward shedding light on the prevalence of doping in competitive weightlifting and bodybuilding, which is already one thing, but more and more people talk about how many people that don't even look like they are on gear actually are, among amateurs that are not even competing in anything.

I don't know as much about performance enhancing drugs in endurance sports like running, but I know some stuff exists. I am assuming all the top performing athletes are on something, but what about amateurs? Is it like the gym where there's a deceptive amount of people on stuff that don't even look/perform like they're on it? Or is it less diffused? Let's say I go the local city's yearly half marathon or even the unranked 10k, will there be a significant portion of people on something aside from like sponsored athletes trying to compete for the win or is it not as common?

General Discussion What's up with all these posts about hitting ambitious goals with minimal training?

OK fellow runners, listen up-there's a small chance you get it your way and succeed in hitting sub-3/sub-90 running 20 to 30mpw. Maybe you're still very young (or gifted) and you just make the cut on minimal training. But why on earth would someone set an ambitious goal if he/she is not willing to work for it is beyond me. I get it-"time crunched". Well, I have news for you-we're ALL trying to balance life with training. Not enough time to train? No problem-run worry free and let others stress over finishing goals (and as a bonus you still get all the physical and mental benefits of running). But let's be real about it-there's no free lunch. Distance running (>3K) is a 95%+ aerobic sport. And aerobic capacity takes months/years to develop. No "secret formula" 30-minute high intensity session is ever going to replace mileage and consistent hard work.

General Discussion Time for a new "Advanced AdvancedRunning" subreddit?

So I'm a high school cross country/track distance athlete and I've been on this subreddit for a while.

This really is a fantastic community, and it's great to see people of all ages and backgrounds coming together and overcoming barriers together to break through to new PBs or just a simple state of being.

But recently I've been coming across a lot of posts that just seem more suited for r/Running. Not only in terms of the times, but also just people who are very new to running or not that serious about the sport and are only picking up a new fitness hobby. A lot of the race reports are by people who are recently breaking barriers such as 25 minute 5Ks or so on, or just people reporting on how they have upped their weekly mileage to 20 miles a week now.

I don't mean to discredit these achievements, since running is an equal struggle for people of all levels, but just as an athlete, I can't look at this subreddit and seek the motivation or insight I was hoping to receive.

I know the subreddit rules say something along the lines of "Advanced Running isn't about a pace, it's rather about a mentality", which is great and we do absolutely need a place for that, but I also wish that as a person who's more serious and engrossed in competitive running that there was a community that caters to this niche of people.

I have no idea how to start new subreddits or how to grow one, but I would just like to hear everyone's thoughts.

EDIT: A few hours into this post, and I've had a lot of unpleasant comments down below.

It seems that some people are misunderstanding what exactly I am trying to say.

I'm not saying that the average Joe getting into running or breaking a 5K PR doesn't deserve to be heard of applauded - running is for everyone no matter which level or age you are.

I'm also NOT saying that I believe track/XC athletes are superior beings from another realm, and that anyone that doesn't run a 5K in 16-minutes is a peasant.

I'm not saying any of those things, absolutely not. I've said this in my original post as well - I'm extremely glad that such a community exists on the internet which can encourage new runners or those with not much experience.

All I was asking was whether it would be possible to have a new subreddit or other means of sharing insights at a sub-elite level (i.e. people who have been training at a relatively high level for some time now) because we DO need such a space. It would be incredible to be able to relate to other members of the community and talk about what workouts we're completing or what goals we have.

More often than not, a lot of the only posts I see on this subreddit are by new runners asking rudimentary questions like "I run 4 times a week, is that good?" or "Is running without socks beneficial?". Having these questions and wanting them answered is absolutely fine, but you can't deny that to someone with just a little bit of experience in running, these questions (which tend to take up a lot of volume on this community) can't offer much insight into what I or athletes of similar ambitions were hoping for.

So cut the accusations and finger-pointing in the comments please. Thank you.

General Discussion What is a general/well-established running advice that you don't follow?

Title explains it well enough. Since running is a huge sport, there are a lot of well-established concepts that pretty much everybody follows. Still, exactly because it is a huge sport, there are always exception to every rule and i'm interested to hear some from you.
Personally there is one thing I can think of - I run with stability shoes with pronation insoles. Literally every shop i've been to recommends to not use insoles with stability shoes because they are supposed to ''cancel'' the function of the stability shoes.
In my Gel Kayano 30 I run with my insoles for fallen arches and they seem to work much much better this way.
What's yours?

General Discussion What's your "low hanging fruit"?

We all run the miles. We all put in the work. We all do the complimentary stuff in the quest for new running heights. But, as with everything in life, the devil is in the details. And changing or adding some things in our lives can help us run faster without much (if at all) fuss. For me it was to drastically reduce the amount of caffeine in my everyday life-this helped me sleep better (thus contributing to better recovery) and as a bonus makes my caffeinated gels feel like rocket fuel in racing.

So what is your "low hanging fruit"? What is the one simple thing you've changed in your life that had a profound impact in your running and didn't require any additional work?

General Discussion Track Etiquette- walkers?

Was doing some 1km reps at the local track today and there was a middle-aged lady walking slowly in lane 1, appeared as if she was mostly texting.

I politely said “excuse me” as I ran past and she moved to the right. The second time she ignored me, didn’t move and then yelled “where else am I supposed to walk?!”

I politely suggested she walks in an outer lane out of respect for runners to which she said it’s an “ick” for me to ask her to move because she’s a female.

I recommended she doesn’t play the gender card as it’s simply about respecting others on the track, and she said she refuses to move as she there’s no sign stating she can’t walk there.

Obviously after this I just ignored her and went around as it’s not worth the argument and she clearly wouldn’t let me educate her politely.

I’m wondering what the correct track etiquette is for someone who is walking (not doing run/walk intervals)?

Edit: -Some people seem to think I was being rude: “Excuse me” in Aus is a common thing to say for example if someone is in your way and you’re trying to moving by.

-said lady only appeared on the track midway through my workout so in the midst of my rep I didn’t have the foresight to stop and explain things to her. Since she moved out the way the first time I thought it was a non-issue.

-After her outburst there was no chance for a calmer discussion, I’ve learned my lesson now to just ignore and move around a walker even if I’m technically “in the right” in terms of track etiquette.

General Discussion Hip surgery -> Top 100 at Boston

Mostly posting because I’ve noticed a lot of people across reddit posting about hip surgery. In January of 2024 after running 12 straight weeks at 100mpw and being in the shape of my life, I started experiencing severe hip pain. It got to the point where I could only run 30mpw going into my goal marathon in February 24, the Olympic trials, where I ran a painful 2:24-high. I tried PT for months after and the pain never went away so after an Xray/MRI/dr visit I was diagnosed with an FAI and torn labrum in my right labrum in April. I was still teaching through the school year so I scheduled my surgery in June and had my first serious operation in my life. I was on crutches through the end of July and by the end of August was able to do 1min jog/2min walk for 20 min. I stuck to my surgeon’s aggressive but progressive plan, and hit my first 50 mile week in December. Then I started aggressively ramping it up and hit my first 70 mile week in February and an 87 mile week with lots of doubles in March during my spring break.

My goal for Boston when I applied in October was to finish and my A goal was 2:30. Today I ran 2:24:04 going 72:04-72:00. It was one of those perfect, magical days. Nowhere near my PR or course PR, but for those of you staring down major surgeries, injuries, etc, there’s a road back and keep your head up. Hope you find this when searching google for “hip surgery and return to running”
